Al Satwa could look very different in the coming years. Dubai Municipality has changed its planning rules to allow more apartments and mixed-use buildings, with eligible plots of at least 1,000 square metres potentially accommodating a ground floor plus eight residential floors. Smaller plots have new development options too. For residents, this could eventually mean more homes, more shops and a changing neighbourhood skyline.

New UAE traffic regulations will limit individual residents to five licensed vehicles from 1 January 2027. The first two fall under the standard provision, while registering or renewing a third, fourth or fifth will attract an additional fee. The amount hasn't been announced, and it's not yet clear what happens to people who already have more than five cars registered. Something for multi-car households to watch.

The UAE's ban on the veterinary use of ciprofloxacin took effect on 1 November. The restriction covers nine veterinary products containing the antibiotic, including eight imported products and one registered locally. It is intended to protect the effectiveness of important antibiotics used in human medicine. Pet owners whose animals have been prescribed the drug should speak to their vet about suitable alternatives.

Dubai plans to let visitors apply for single-entry and multiple-entry tourist visas directly through the Visit Dubai website during November. The change should make the process easier for residents helping relatives or friends plan a trip. A separate invitation-only Dubai Access Club will offer benefits to repeat visitors. Both initiatives have been announced, but full service and eligibility details are still to come.

Dubai has launched Yumnak, a service bringing healthcare, transport, home support and housing assistance together for eligible senior citizens aged 60 and above. Depending on eligibility, support can include home doctor visits, nursing, medication delivery, assisted transport and home modifications. Families can call 800 588 to enquire about services and requests. One point of contact should make a complicated care journey a little easier.

Dubai Police have arrested six suspects over an alleged Dh2.6 million cryptocurrency fraud involving an unlicensed exchange. The victim reportedly lost Dh2 million in cash and Dh600k in digital assets during a proposed transaction. Police traced and secured the virtual assets and warned residents to use authorised trading providers. When someone wants you to move a large sum through an unlicensed intermediary, that is a warning sign.
