Lost your job in the UAE? You may be entitled to unemployment insurance, but don't miss the deadline. Khaleej Times explains that eligible workers generally have 30 days from the end of employment, or resolution of a labour dispute, to claim. You'll also need 12 consecutive months of cover and must meet other conditions. This is an existing rule worth remembering.

The details

Workers in the UAE who lose their jobs involuntarily may qualify for financial compensation through the Involuntary Loss of Employment insurance scheme, commonly known as ILOE.

A Khaleej Times explainer published on 2 November sets out eight conditions employees must satisfy to receive benefits.

Among the most important is the requirement to have subscribed to the insurance scheme for at least 12 consecutive months.

Workers must generally submit a claim within 30 days of their employment ending, or within 30 days of the resolution of an employment-related labour dispute where applicable.

The scheme does not cover workers dismissed for disciplinary reasons, fraudulent claims or job losses related to strikes and non-peaceful protests.

Applicants must also meet the requirements relating to legal presence in the UAE and unresolved work absence complaints.

Compensation stops when the claimant takes up another job.

The insurance is intended to provide temporary income support while eligible employees search for new employment.

However, receiving a claim payment is not automatic simply because someone has lost their job. Subscription history, the reason for termination and the claimant's circumstances all matter.

For employees, the practical priority is to check their insurance status and the applicable deadline promptly after termination.

These are existing eligibility requirements. The November report is a reminder, not an announcement of a new insurance scheme.
