Dubai International Airport is trialling self-driving wheelchairs that can transport passengers from check-in towards their departure gates. The technology is being tested by dnata in Terminal 1, with possible expansion to Terminal 3. It's not yet a standard passenger service, but it could make independent airport travel much easier for people with limited mobility.

The details

Dnata is testing autonomous wheelchair technology at Dubai International Airport as part of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for People of Determination.

The trial involves a self-driving wheelchair designed to help passengers move through the airport without relying continuously on another person to push them.

The equipment uses sensors to navigate terminal environments and includes a manual override that allows the passenger to stop the chair.

Testing has been taking place in Concourse D at Terminal 1, with the possibility of expansion to Terminal 3.

The initiative was highlighted during AccessAbilities Expo in Dubai, alongside other assistive technologies designed to improve travel for passengers with mobility, sensory and other accessibility needs.

Dubai Airports and Emirates have also introduced accessibility training and support programmes, including assistance for people with hidden disabilities.

The wheelchair initiative remains a trial rather than a universally available service. Passengers requiring mobility assistance should continue arranging support with their airline or airport service provider in advance.
