Nine hours behind the wheel is the new daily limit under UAE traffic rules taking effect on 1 January 2027. Khaleej Times reports that the cap applies to drivers generally, not just truckers or professional drivers. And if you're too tired to drive safely, you must stop even before reaching nine hours. Long road trips will need a little more planning.

The details

Drivers in the UAE will be restricted to a maximum of nine hours of driving within any 24-hour period when new federal traffic regulations take effect on 1 January 2027.

The requirement is contained in Article 7, paragraph 2, of Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026, which implements the country's updated traffic law.

According to Khaleej Times, the provision sets out general obligations for drivers and is not restricted to commercial vehicles, trucks or professional drivers.

The rule also prohibits motorists from continuing to drive when fatigue or exhaustion affects their ability to operate a vehicle safely.

This means a driver who becomes dangerously tired after fewer than nine hours must stop rather than continue driving until the maximum period is reached.

The regulation is intended to reduce accidents associated with drowsiness, poor concentration and delayed reactions.

Khaleej Times reports that the UAE recorded 20 traffic accidents attributed to fatigue and drowsiness during 2025.

The new provision is particularly relevant to people making long intercity journeys, professional drivers and motorists who spend extended periods travelling.

The published report does not establish specific new penalties for exceeding the nine-hour limit.

Drivers should monitor further announcements from licensing and enforcement authorities before implementation.
