Dubai is investing another Dh3 billion in stormwater drainage, with about 100km of new and extended drainage lines planned across neighbourhoods including Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Al Quoz and Al Satwa. The work forms part of the wider Dh30 billion Tasreef programme, designed to make the city better prepared for heavy rain.
The details
Dubai Municipality has awarded four contracts worth Dh3 billion for the next phase of the emirate's stormwater drainage expansion.
The projects form part of Tasreef, a Dh30 billion programme introduced following the severe flooding experienced during April 2024.
The latest contracts cover approximately 100km of main drainage pipelines across an area of around 100 square kilometres.
Neighbourhoods included in the programme range from Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Al Manara to Al Quoz, Al Barsha, Al Wasl, Zabeel, Al Bada'a, Al Satwa and Al Marmoom.
The wider programme aims to increase Dubai's rainwater drainage capacity by 700 per cent, enabling the network to manage more than 20 million cubic metres of water per day when completed.
The completion target for the overall programme is 2033.
The investment is intended to reduce flooding risks and strengthen long-term infrastructure resilience. Residents should distinguish the contracts now awarded from drainage capacity that will only become available after the works are delivered.
