Dubai approved a five-year plan to expand walking and cycling infrastructure across 25 residential areas and improve access around 63 public transport stations by 2030. The plan is designed to make first- and last-mile journeys easier, linking neighbourhoods with metro, bus and other transport services.
The details
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority approved a five-year soft-mobility plan on 19 July 2026 covering 25 residential areas and the surroundings of 63 public transport stations by 2030.
The plan focuses on improving walking and cycling infrastructure and strengthening connections between residential neighbourhoods, business districts, attractions and public transport. RTA said the selected areas were assessed using factors including population density, public transport use, land use and the existing condition of pedestrian and cycling facilities.
The plan will increase the total number of targeted residential areas to 34 by 2030. Implementation is already under way in Dubai Marina, Al Murar, Naif, Al Rigga and Al Muraqqabat.
The resident benefit is expected to be strongest for people making first- and last-mile journeys between their homes and metro or bus stations. The project is a forward-looking infrastructure plan rather than a completed service change, so the timing and precise works will vary by neighbourhood. The announcement does not mean that all 25 areas will receive completed facilities immediately.
